Girls Action Foundation began in 1995 doing grassroots empowerment education for girls and today is a national organization with over 250 network members across Canada. The vision to grow from local to national was born in a responsive effort to expand our local work. We wanted (all) girls to have access to the resources and support to achieve her potential and contribute fully to society.

The vision of the LIGHT A SPARK campaign is to expand the Girls Action Network and build a powerful community of support for girls and young women.  We want to engage passionate and accomplished women - bright lights who get our cause and want to give back to girls. 

Girls' adolescence is marked by a steady decline in mental health; girls’ stress levels increase while their confidence, self-esteem and satisfaction with their lives decrease. For many of us this gender disparity may not sound alarming, because, well, aren't all teenage girls sulky?
The fact that collectively we have not yet addressed the declining mental health of girls should sound an alarm bell.

“Fat thighs, bum may help you live longer”...

...As we can see, media messages about girls and young women are at odds. Girls are portrayed as passive victims or responsible for everything from an increase in moral depravity to the decline of civilization.
