Girls' Programs

Our Approach

For nearly 15 years now, Girls Action has developed a unique approach to empowering girls and young women. We understand that girls’ lives are complex, so by combining popular education and arts-based activities, the girls explore themes related to body image, self-esteem, violence, dating, media & pop culture, the structural barriers related to racism and poverty, and much more. Girls’ Club provides a safe space for girls to come together, have fun, chat, ask questions, and be themselves!

Evaluations have shown that Girls Action programs help girls build their self-esteem, critical thinking and communication skills, as well as encourage civic engagement. Workshops are offered in partnership with community organizations, schools, and arts groups.

Girls Action Girls’ Programs Are Designed To:

  • Provide fun activities to increase girls’ awareness of, and ability to address issues that impact their lives and communities
  • Build critical thinking skills
  • Build communications skills, self-awareness and self-esteem
  • Encourage girls to say what they want to change in their community, and support them to take action
  • Amplify girls’ abilities to turn their experiences and skills into community action and leadership
  • Connect girls to mentors and role models

Girls Action’s Programs for Girls:

Girls taking their space! Girls Club is our after school violence prevention and empowerment program for 11 to 13 year old girls in the Montreal area. The program applies a popular education approach that, for each issue or topic, starts from girls’ lived experiences. Girls share their knowledge, build their skills, develop critical thinking and then move into action.

Girls Club is facilitated by a skilled and enthusiastic team of women made up of a program coordinator, facilitators, and volunteers. Many of the workshops involve guests from the community who share their passion and expertise with the girls in areas such as theatre, self-defence, media arts, yoga and much more.. Check out their scrapbook and their video!

MAKE SOME NOISE! is a project offered by Girls Action Foundation that focuses on media arts, social justice issues and leadership skills. Groups of young women from across Canada participate in hands-on photography and video workshops in their communities. The projects are a way for the young women to Make Some Noise about issues that are important to them. Female mentors with expertise in media arts support the girls throughout the project. Our site, Kickaction.ca, provides opportunities for girls to publish and share their multi-media creations with other girls across Canada!

ART ATTACK is our after school art program for girls that are from 14 to 17 years old in the Montreal area. Combining popular education and media arts-based activities, the girls explore themes related to body image, self-esteem, violence, dating, pop culture, the media, and more. Check out their video!
